Changes to Ontario’s brownfields regulation effective July 2011

On July 1, 2011, significant amendments to O. Reg. 153/04, Records of Site Condition came into force, including changes to the filing and acknowledgment of records of site condition (RSCs).

If you did not have an acknowledged RSC filed on the registry by June 30, 2011, a qualified person and owner of a property will have to re-submit a RSC for filing, which meets the requirements that come into force on July 1, 2011.

If you have already submitted a RSC and problems were identified by the Ministry, please contact the ministry with any questions before re-submitting the RSC to minimize delays.

Set out below are some common errors found in RSC submissions, and a list of the supporting documents required for filing a RSC.

ERIS continually strives to update databases in a timely manner to ensure the most accurate information. Most databases are now updated monthly or quarterly, rather than annually.

ERIS has collected over 4 million records nationwide and we are always looking to add new databases that will assist the clients in their due diligence. If there is data that you think we should add to the reports, please email your suggestions to the Research and Development Manager, Mark Mattei, at mmatei@eris.ca.

ERIS On the Go!

On June 1st and 2nd ERIS was an exhibitor at the inaugural RemEast Conference held by the Environmental Services Association of Nova Scotia (ESANS) in Halifax, NS. This conference and trade show was sold out so attendance was high. There were breakout sessions on new remediation techniques and technologies and projects along with policy discussions. There were also a couple of lively receptions that went on well into the night. Special thanks to Maxxam, AGAT and Golder for sponsoring these.

On June 3, 2011 ERIS was in Halifax to attend the second annual Brownfields Marketplace Summit Series. The half day workshop featured such speakers as Michel Poirier from New Brunswick Environment representing the Atlantic PIRI Working Group, Paul Gregory from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, Fred Bonner from the Canadian Land Reclamation Association, Sven Dean from GroundTech Solutions, David Haley from SNC Lavalin, Dan Christmas from the Membertou First Nations and Bill Lahey who was the luncheon Keynote Speaker and who spoke on the development of the Nova Scotia EGSPA legislation. The intimate group of attendees heard presentations on such topics as Advancements in Site Characterization, King’s Wharf Development project in Halifax and Trends in Sustainable Reclamation and Remediation to name a few. The workshop also provided for some great networking opportunities. This event was coordinated to run into the ESANS AGM. A special thanks goes to Adam Cooney of ESANS for all his assistance with this event.

Across Canada with ERIS

Alberta

From June 20th to the 24th, ERIS visited Calgary and Edmonton for the Brownfields Marketplace Summit Series. The successful half day events featured such speakers as Mike, Mellross (City of Edmonton), Will Ratliffe (Husky Energy/CPPI), Michael Choi (Hemmera), Gordon Bures (Frac-Rite) and Jeff Bibbings (Ground Tech Solutions). Seminar topics that were covered included many different aspects of service station remediation, while the entire expo provided for some excellent networking opportunities.

ERIS’ Regional Manager, Isabel Pereira, took advantage of the opportunity to meet with several clients in both cities to discuss ERIS’ Alberta environmental database reports, the recently added HELP landfill inventory (now available with ERIS searches), and the upcoming enhancements to the ERIS website, including access to interactive reports & mapping, and instant reports. The trip was a huge success, as clients were thrilled to meet with Isabel and learn more about our products. Everyone we met with expressed positive feedback about the proposed new functionality of our site and are excited to see it all roll out very soon.

British Columbia

Research and Development Manager, Mark Mattei was in BC from July 11th – 15th meeting with clients to promote ERIS’ BC specific products and reports. ERIS’ BC Reports offer information from the Site Registry, to Detailed Reports for each record at no additional cost. These reports have dramatically improved the ease with which information is obtained on any Stage 1 or Phase 1 work in BC.

If you would like Mark or Isabel to visit you for a meet & greet in your territory, or to set up a web-conference to learn more, contact them by email at mmattei@eris.ca, ipereira@eris.ca or by calling toll free at 1-866-517-5204.
